Description

Reward Charts are a great way to teach children invaluable life lessons in discipline, independence and delayed gratification. The Rewards Chart promotes teamwork between the mentor and child, providing a means for leadership without the need for force or threats. This makes "chores" fun. as the focus is on the reward established, not the work. These charts can be used over and over, with new goals and lessons-to-learn, re-established each week.

Every child in every home and classroom should have one.

How it Works!

  • Write your child's name on their chart.
  • Using the magnets place the Reward Chart on the fridge.
  • Sit down with your child and work out the five things to focus on for the week. This is based on the capabilities of your child and the skills or tasks you would like to teach or improve upon. Example: Use Manners, Pick up Toys, Clean Teeth. Make sure your child understands what they need to do to achieve points and hence their rewards.
  • Establish the overall "Weekly Goal" and the Reward for achieving it and write them on the chart.
  • Establish the two interim goals and the associated rewards and record on the chart.
  • Explain to your child that if they do something during the week that is extra good, eg. put toys away without you having to ask, then they will receive extra points in the "Extra Points" column.
  • At the end of each day, record the results with your child on their chart. If a tick can be added immediately after accomplishing eg. Make Bed, then get your child to tick their chart then, rather than at the end of the day. Please note: It is important for your child to tick their own chart, rather than you ticking it. This gives them ownership and allows them to see the conclusion of a job well done.
  • At the end of each day, discuss why they received or didn't receive points.
  • Praise your child for the things they did achieve.
  • Discuss with them how they could improve next time.
  • Help them set their goals for the next day reminding them of the rewards and how many points they need to get. Emphasise the "Extra Points" column to help achieve their goals.
  • Throughout the day, keep referring back to their Reward Chart to keep them focused on what needs to be done. Reference back to the chart is a great way to remind them of their goals and associated rewards.
  • Take points away from their "Extra Points" section if they misbehave. Just the threat of this often brings them back into focus and helps you achieve what you are asking them to do. For example, if the goal is to "Brush Teeth" without incident and your child is refusing to do so, give a warning, eg. "Oh dear, if you don't brush your teeth right now without complaining, then Mummy will have to take a point off your chart". Only take points away from the "Extra Points" section. Don't rub out a tick they have previously achieved. If there are no extra points then put a number in the negative.
  • At the end of the week, add up all the points and record in the Total box. Encourage your child the day before if they need a certain number of points to achieve their goal, to help them focus for their final day.
  • Reward them if they achieved the end goal. Discuss what they need to do to help improve for next time if they didn't.
  • Wipe everything clean and start again. Please note: Marker left for a week, may need eucalyptus oil to remove all pen traces.
  • Keep the five tasks the same if you feel they need some more work or change according to your child's accomplishment.
  • Start all over again the next week.
