I was at an Expo recently and I witnessed how important it is to refocus your child onto something fun and interesting to help them overcome any fears they may have concerning pooing in the toilet. The Mum approached me and said that her 3.5 year old son was toilet trained but had a fear of pooing in the toilet and purposefully chose to poo in his pants. I spoke to her son and said "If you do wees and poos in the toilet, you could get a prize...." and before I could finish, he strongly told me, "poos go in my pants, NOT IN THE TOILET".

I was quite taken back by the conviction in his statement. I then showed him some Piddlers (disolvable toilet targets) and said, "If we throw one of these in the toilet, do you think you could hit it with your poo poo?" His eyes widened and he said excitedly, "Yeah!" "Which colour would you choose?" "Green" " So do you think you could do poos on the toilet and hit the green one" "Yeah!" The turn-around was in a matter of seconds. I couldn't believe it. Replace any fears with something fun your child will relate to, and you will get results.
